CHATEAU DE FONBEL 2013

SAINT EMILION GRAND CRU

Blend : 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot

Terroir : This 16 hectare estate on the St Emilion plain has a sandy, gravelly terroir, but despite the humble situation, Fonbel produces some sensational wines - hardly surprising given that this is an Alain Vauthier estate.

Tasting notes : Notes of crème de mûre, sweet exotic bramble, earthy minerals and vegetation leap from the glass. There is a bit more restraint on the palate, with leafy Cabernet Franc flavours and red berry fruit. It is a little bit rustic, but it is fun and possesses real energy and life.

History : Château de Fonbel is located in the Saint Emilion wine appellation and covers 16 hectares (39 acres) of vineyard. It is owned by Alain Vautier, proprietor of the celebrated Château Ausone and the highly regarded Château Moulin St Georges.

Four grape varieties are grown for Château de Fonbel wine: Merlot (70%) dominates, supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Petit Verdot (7%) and Carmenere (3%). The wines are aged in 30% new oak barrels.
